Tillman gives Maryland its first title in over 40 years.
“We’re understanding more about how we’re going to get our shots,” head coach Brian Earl said. “What you saw tonight is we had a lot of good looks at the basket.”
After the Red’s most recent defeat on Wednesday, sophomore guard Matt Morgan said the shots would begin to fall. Against Lafayette, the shots certainly fell and Cornell won, 82-75.
Yale’s stunning win over Harvard knocked the Crimson from its three-year perch at the top of the Ivy League. With Harvard’s loss and wins from Penn and Princeton, the Tigers and the Quakers are co-champions of the conference. Brown and Yale tied for fourth, Columbia and Cornell took sixth and Dartmouth placed last.
Piling up 527 yards of offense on Cornell, the Quakers bulldozed their way to a 42-20 victory in Ithaca on Cornell’s senior day. With Princeton’s victory over Dartmouth, Penn earns a share of the league title for the second straight year.
Against the Raiders Wednesday, the Red could not find the same magic and Cornell dropped its third straight game to begin the 2016-17 season, losing to Colgate at home, 67-63
Cornell’s win was made possible by a game-changing 33-yard reception from senior punter Chris Fraser, his first career catch.
It has been six and a half years since Cornell men’s basketball won three straight conference championships. Six and a half years of losing seasons. Six and a half years of looking up at the league champion from near the bottom of the league. With the 2016-17 men’s basketball season kicking off Friday against Binghamton, that could all change. The road back to the top of the conference begins again, and, with a veteran roster, a new coach and an inaugural conference tournament, this year is looking brighter than in the past.
Princeton’s shutout victory over Penn on Saturday leaves Harvard the only team in the league with an undefeated record. The Crimson triumphed over Columbia to move to 5-0 in the conference with two games remaining.
Last week’s deflating 56-7 blowout loss to Princeton capped off a four-game losing streak that followed the Red’s remarkable 3-0 start to the season. A day after the 49-point trouncing, the team gathered for a players-only meeting to “refocus” with just three games left in the year.
