As many people yearn to return to some form of normalcy, states are beginning to consider what the reopening of nonessential businesses should look like. In his daily press briefing Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said a crucial first step for reopening is widespread COVID-19 testing — which New York State currently lacks.

On that same day, Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, Weill Cornell Dean, announced a new initiative to begin antibody testing employees of Weill Cornell.

In order to inform educational practices in the coming weeks Cornell Health administered a survey to better understand student attitudes regarding COVID-19.

From April 2 to April 3, the Skorton Center for Health Initiatives at Cornell Health administered a digital survey via multiple email lists with the goal of understanding students’ attitude and shift in behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the survey are intended to inform administrators and professors, so they can appropriately develop educational material and messages.

In a Zoom call initially addressed to family and friends, Weill Cornell fellow of pulmonology, Dr. David Price, has attempted to dispel some of the public confusion regarding the virus. Since being reposted online the video has garnered nearly four million views. Working at one of the epicenters of the pandemic — New York City — and specializing in patients with respiratory illnesses in the intensive care unit, Price is uniquely positioned to speak about COVID-19.

Local health officials of announced the opening of a new facility to test residents for COVID-19 in light of increased demand for screening.

Tompkins County Opens New COVID-19 Testing Center to Replace Drive-Through Location

In order to accommodate the drastic local uptick in demand for virus testing, the county will open a new, expanded sampling location in Ithaca.

The sampling center is located in the parking lot of the Shops at Ithaca Mall and will be open starting Tuesday, March 24, after which the center will be open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The new testing facility replaces the drive-through testing facility north of Cornell’s campus.

As part of the recent hold on campus activities all nonessential research has been halted, putting current projects and papers in limbo.

Cornell Suspends Majority of on Campus Research

On March 15, Provost Michael Kotlikoff and Vice Provost Emmanuel Gianellis alerted principal investigators and researchers in an email that the majority of on campus research activities would be restricted.

For some, this suspension could result in significant delays in conducting experiments and publishing papers. But it remains unclear how this halt in research will affect the long term projects of laboratories or the degree progress of graduate students.
