Goalie Trio Looking to Stifle Offenses

The ball is launched in the air and it’s up to one person to make the save. The goalie waits for her instincts to take control and blocks the ball from entering the goal. The fans, on the edge of their seats, are biting their lips, waiting as the goalie dives to make the great save and ensure a victory.
This year, Cornell women’s soccer has three equipped goalies that are all counted on each game to anchor the defense. The squad recruited two talented freshmen, Megan Bartlett and Kelly Murphy, to help in the Red’s defensive tactics, along with returning starter Jodi Palmer.

Penn Dominates W. Soccer in Ivy Opener

Despite having home field advantage, the women’s soccer team fell short against Penn Saturday night by a disappointing score of 6-0. This loss makes the Red 1-7-1 for the season and 0-2 in Ivy League play, while it advances Penn’s record to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0 in Ivy League standings.
“It didn’t go the way we wanted it to, but hopefully we’re going to work this week on playing better next weekend and improving,” said freshman goalkeeper Megan Bartlett. “[We’re] trying to come back and be positive and not let this game get to our heads that much … because there’s no need to dwell on it.”

Cornell Sophomore Attacker Supplies Offensive Fire Power

With two assists in this past weekend’s game against Colgate, sophomore attacker Lena Russomagno demonstrated her swift skills with the soccer ball. There was no doubt in the mind of head coach Danielle LaRoche when she named Russomagno one of three captains to lead the Red in 2008.
“There’s times when she does stuff with the ball or does stuff with shooting or finishing, I don’t know how she does it,” LaRoche said. “I can’t explain it. I can’t coach it. I can’t teach it. I wish I can.”
During her first year at Cornell, Russomagno played in every game and started in 12 of those matchups. Throughout the season, she accumulated 14 points off of six goals and two assists, making her the Red’s leading scorer.

W. Soccer Optimistic For 2008 Season

After a series of disappointing losses, the women’s soccer team (1-6-1, 0-1-0 Ivy) is looking forward to its upcoming games, trying to turn things around and achieve its goal of having a chance of winning the Ivy League title.
Head coach Danielle LaRoche leads the Red for a second season and has set her goals high in 2008. Whitney Stich — the only senior on the squad — as well as junior forward Eva Dixon and sophomore midfielder Lena Russomagno, will share the captain’s duties.
“Every single game is going to be a battle,” LaRoche said. “Every win that we get, we’re going to have earned it. Looking at our talent level and where we are injury wise, I really think that we can compete.”

Women’s Soccer Begins Ivy Play, Travels to In-State Rival Colgate

In the midst of a five-game losing streak, the women’s soccer team opens its Ivy League play tonight as it travels to Columbia to face the Lions. Afterwards, the Red continues on the road to Colgate, our archrival, for a Sunday afternoon matchup before coming home.
Last year, the Red (1-4-1) ended its season in disappointing fashion, losing a tight 2-1 match to the Lions (4-2-1). Cornell will have to use the lessons it learned in that loss to counter Columbia’s up-tempo style and avoid getting off on the wrong foot in Ivy play. Now, the Red is reenergized with a desire to win and a hope to maintain control of the all-time series with the Lions, a 17-5-0 lead.

With Six Missing, Women’s Soccer Drops Two

Unfortunately, the women’s soccer team could not utilize home field advantage and went without a win this weekend, battling Buffalo to a scoreless tie before losing, 2-0, to Maine yesterday.
“We fought hard,” said junior forward Eva Dixon. “We have some things to work on this week. I think we were a lot more intense on Friday and we needed to come out that way in [the game against Maine] and we just didn’t have it.”

Sprint Football Opens Season With Grudge Match

The sprint football team kicks off its 2008 season tonight on the road against its strongest Ivy League foe — Penn. After finishing third in the Collegiate Sprint Football League last season, the Red hopes to rebound and reclaim it former 2006 CSFL title.
Cornell and Penn, which is also opening its season tonight, are no strangers on the field. During their last meeting with the Quakers, the Red closed out the series with an agonizing 35-28 loss in overtime on Franklin Field after defeated Penn earlier in the season at Schoellkopf Field, 23-18.

W. Soccer Ready for Bonnies, Mountain Hawks

After splitting a pair of games last weekend, the women’s soccer team is preparing to play its first pair of home games of the 2008 season. Cornell begins the weekend tonight against St. Bonaventure before wrapping things up on Sunday against Lehigh.
Despite losing to the Bonnies (2-3-0) last year, the Red (1-1-0) leads the overall series, 9-1-1, and hopes to add another win this weekend. Sunday’s matchup will be the first time the Red faces Lehigh, yet Cornell already has some experience against members of the Patriot League, boasting a 35-21-4 record.
Head coach Danielle LaRoche is confident that the Red’s attack will lead the squad to victories in the upcoming games.
