On May 15 the Cornell Interfraternity Council welcomed Alpha Lambda Mu as the council’s first Muslim-interest fraternity.
“This movement — it’s an awakening,” he said. “It’s time now. It’s time to do something, and sit back no longer.”
The ombudsman — who is “embedded in the university fabric” and “knows the quasi-legal structure of the university, the administrative, student, faculty, graduate and undergraduate levels” — can help Cornellians in ways that outside counsel could not, argued faculty representative Martin Hatch, professor emeritus of music.
“By virtue of being different — being Indian in an all black neighborhood — my sister and I felt like we had targets on our backs,” he said.
Julia Montejo ’17, vice president of diversity and inclusion, acknowledged that the S.A. needs to do more to include low-income students in the political system, but she said it is difficult for representatives to step outside their personal experiences when making legislative decisions.
“America is not inevitably marching towards equality,” she said. “We have to fight for our rights — bitterly, consciously, tenaciously.”
