DERY | Am I an Adult or Do I Just Live Off-Campus?

As an underclassmen, I envisioned adulthood at Cornell and off-campus life as one and the same. Well, now living in the heart of collegetown, I feel just as adult now as I did eating RPCC brunch freshman year. There comes a time in every off-campus student’s transition from on-campus living where we must ask ourselves: Am I an adult or do I just live off-campus?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the world’s best chef. I try to follow the odd recipe here and there and find kitchen hacks online. Sometimes, when I’m feeling bougie, I’ll look up what foie gras is and then fantasize about winning Masterchef. More often than not, however, my version of cooking involves throwing a bunch of unrelated items into a pan and hoping for the best. 

How to Throw a Dinner Party: A Guide for the College Student

A few days ago, Pallavi Kenkare ’20 wrote an opinion piece in The Sun about dinner parties, which can be summarized easily with just one of its sentences: “Between the ages of 18 and 22, do not invite anyone over to dinner.” To be completely honest with you, reading Pallavi’s claim that this was the only message to be taken away from her failed attempt made me incredibly sad. Some of my fondest memories here at Cornell are dinner parties that my friends or I have thrown.
