Unlike previous years, the theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” was much more open-ended, celebrating the past, present and future of American culture through fashion. Naturally, I enjoyed the classic (and expected) red-carpet glamour of Billie Eilish’s blush Oscar de La Renta look, and Yara Shahidi and Anok Yai’s celestial homages to silent film star and activist Josephine Baker.
Is it as explosive as “Skyfall?” Is it as sexy as “For Your Eyes Only?” Will anything ever top “Goldfinger?” The answer for each one of these questions is no. But that’s because, with this release, Eilish has subverted the standard creation formula for a Bond theme.
The ceremony itself remains just as chaotic as the previous years, with some winners arousing more surprise than others.
‘Blood Harmony’ is a bittersweet, public love letter that I believe anyone can relate to in some form.
There are coping mechanisms you invariably adopt during a dry spell. You rationalize it: Has it really been that long? Have there really been any eligible candidates? You download Tinder, delete Tinder, redownload Tinder, change your settings, swipe through and realize that your hometown Tinder is not what you had remembered it to be when you were swiping through the slim pickings of Ithaca Tinder. When an interaction with a member of the preferred sex doesn’t end in the wondrous, distant land of Hookup, you wonder, like Cher from Clueless when she was rejected by, as it turns out, a gay man did my hair get flat?
The highlight of Eilish’s debut album is its versatility.
