Student groups at Cornell University celebrate Black History Month with educational and entertainment events.
Despite the limitations of online events, Cornell Black Students United is finding ways to create a sense of community to celebrate Black History Month.
Fears added that the work was worth it, and said although some people believe that the fulfillment of several demands did not benefit them personally, improving the experiences of black students will eventually improve all students’ experiences.
The initiative has received unanimous support from Cornell constituencies, including the Faculty Senate, Student Assembly and Employee Assembly.

“This is not the last thing that we’re going to do,” said Gaylord Minett ’17.
BSU’s original demand for the name change came in the context of a series of grievances over what they said was a campus culture that is “not conducive to the overall success of of students of color.
“Would this be used as a requirement for tenure?” Dunbar asked. “If someone refused to participate in it, would they not be able to get tenure?”
“After conferring with the administration, we found that the best course of action would be submitting a resolution to the Student Assembly,” the group’s post stated, explaining that they chose to single out this demand and present it to the student body.
“I think that remembering this [takeover] that happened so many years ago means it’s still very relevant to society,” Belsoi said.
