As active student cases have reached 469, Cornell is shutting down campus 21 months after March 2020, leaving students to scramble in the middle of finals week.
As Cornell students now navigate both in-person and online final exams, cases have skyrocketed to a record-high 469 active student cases on campus — the highest number of positives on the Ithaca campus since the start of the pandemic.
Tara Atluri ’24 was a sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who had a “deep love for plants and nature,” CALS Dean Benjamin Houlton wrote to the CALS community, and Ryan Lombardi, vice president for student and campus life, later wrote in a University statement Monday evening.
At around 2:10 p.m. on Tuesday, the Cornell community received a CornellALERT to “shelter in place.” “CornellALERT: Ithaca Campus Shelter in Place – North Campus – Local Police persuing [sic] man with gun in Cayuga Heights north of campus,” the alert read.
Over the course of an hour and a half, Cornell issued four alerts to evacuate several locations across campus, due to bomb threats at the Law School, Goldwin Smith Hall, Upson Hall and Kennedy Hall.
A sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, died Wednesday night, Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi wrote in a Thursday statement. He died as a result of injuries sustained at his apartment complex.
Phillip Zukowski ’23, a sophomore studying computer science, was found dead Saturday in the Ithaca Falls Natural Area.
After reported him missing Wednesday afternoon, authorities recovered the body of first-year Shawn West ’24 on Friday.
Students missing music on the slope will still be able to celebrate the end of the semester.
The Cornell Concert Commission announced on Thursday evening that the artists Saint Motel and Daya are slated to co-headline the homecoming concert at Barton Hall on Saturday October 5th.
