The University will be eliminating all COVID-19 vaccination requirements as of May 20 for current and incoming students and staff, according to a campus-wide email on Friday.
While I finally feel that I am back to normal life, it is undoubtable that reality and “normalcy” have altered. At such an impressionable point in our lives, it seems probable that the pandemic will influence us psychologically, mentally and developmentally — something we may not uncover for years to come.
By reducing testing capacity and frequency, the University made itself less resilient and nimble in the face of a potential new variant like Omicron. Given that COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon, Cornell’s administration should take decisive action to improve its public health capacity, indoor air policies and logistical preparation for the next time there’s a surge.
Cornell takes a conservative approach toward abolishing COVID safety guidelines, requiring conditional mask-wearing and distancing for students and faculty even as New York State ends all restrictions.
On Thursday, May 6, from 1-5 p.m., Cornell will hold it’s second on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Bartels Hall. The clinic is open to all Cornell students, faculty and staff who have yet to receive their first dose of a vaccine.
As on-campus cases rise and quarantine capacity shrinks, Cornell and the rest of Tompkins County is also facing the spread of COVID-19 variants.
Cornell students who are frontline workers are eligible for the COVID vaccine. Yet there are still challenges to receiving it.
Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi wrote that the health department identified a cluster in Greek Life, but did not identify specific chapters.
