University to Eliminate COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements in May

The University will be eliminating all COVID-19 vaccination requirements as of May 20 for current and incoming students and staff, according to a campus-wide email on Friday.
A growing number of Cornell students, including myself, have grown concerned about the ethical implications of Cornell’s COVID-19 booster shot mandate. I have personally discussed this issue with numerous members of the Cornell community, and social media has been ablaze with students voicing their frustrations over this policy decision. While members of the Cornell community may differ in opinions and policy preferences regarding who should be covered under this mandate, one group has been left thoroughly disillusioned — the recently recovered.
In December 2021, over 1,300 students, including myself, tested positive for COVID-19. My first positive test came back on Dec. 25 (as an at-home antigen test) followed by a second positive PCR test on Dec.
In a Monday email, the University encouraged –– though did not require –– eligible students to receive the COVID-19 booster shot.
Under a recent executive order, Cornell will require all Cornell employees to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8 — marking a shift from previous University policy that only encouraged faculty and staff to get their COVID vaccines.
Differing vaccine rollouts across countries have been creating difficulties for Cornell’s international students from delays in receiving FDA-approved doses to ongoing travel restrictions.
While some students said they’re excited for more opportunities to gather in-person, others said they worried about unknown vaccination statuses.
On Thursday, May 6, from 1-5 p.m., Cornell will hold it’s second on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Bartels Hall. The clinic is open to all Cornell students, faculty and staff who have yet to receive their first dose of a vaccine.
Students can sign up for being vaccinated on campus on April 23 — the first day of Cornell’s second set of Wellness Days.
Tompkins County Health Department has created a COVID-19 vaccination registry, prompting more than 7,000 signups in the first week.
