Prof. Alison Lurie taught classes on creative writing, folklore and children’s literature throughout her 35 years at Cornell until her retirement in 2005.
After planning this summer, a new name has been proposed for the English department–– an initiative led by Prof. Carole Boyce-Davies and Prof. Mukoma Wa Ngugi.
Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon, associate professor, wrote one-third of Magda, Jo, Isabella. She was inspired by Sojourner Truth, who she sees as a “radical Pentecostal Christian women.”
Reflecting on his time at Cornell, Schwarz noted changes he witnessed occurring on campus. Increased diversity in the student body in terms of race and gender, he said, was a major change.
“Carol carried the name Warrior in every aspect of her life,” her obituary reads. She was an “indigenous literature scholar, fighter for indigenous rights, and lover of family, community and students.”
