The victim appeared to be about 21 years old, and police were later able to identify him and notify his family, a sergeant said late on Friday.
The historic tunnel, built by University co-founder Ezra Cornell, is now blocked off by a steel gate following the drownings of two Cornellians in the last seven years.
“Unfortunately in our society it’s not enough to put up a sign and expect people will adhere to the rules or advice as posted.”
The City of Ithaca on Wednesday approved Cornell’s proposal to block off a 187-year-old tunnel built by the University’s co-founder.
Instead of completely blocking access to the area, students proposed implementing other safety measures.
Cornell and Ithaca moved one step closer to blocking access to the gorge above Ithaca Falls, which has long served as a local swimming hole but has also been the site of at least two students’ drowning deaths in recent years.
Winston S. Perez-Ventura ’22 died near Fall Creek in a drowning accident in the beginning of August. Since then, the city has been considering shutting down the area due to the frequency of accidents.
