Field Hockey Win Streak Increases to Three

The Red ended Colgate’s five match winning streak, 6-4 on Thursday night. This was the first time that the Red beat Colgate in three years.
An offensive barrage from both squads defined the match. The 10-goal game was the first time that the Red has really been able to open up offensively.
The team is now on a three game winning streak, and has won six out of the last seven. The team will play Bryant this Saturday back at home. Coming off this solid victory against Colgate, the Red should look to continue their offensive momentum going into Bryant.
Bryant has lost eight straight games, and recently lost 0-5 to Colgate.
The team has had a rough season so far, being rattled by teams up and down the rankings. However the team is coming off a close 1-2 loss to Rider University.

Field Hockey to Take On Albany

Field hockey is heading out for a midweek road trip to Hamilton, N.Y., for a match against Colgate. The match will begin tonight at 7 p.m. This out-of-conference match comes after a solid showing for the Red this weekend — defeating Yale 2-1 in an overtime victory and a shutout win over Lehigh. The Red is looking to continue its two-game win streak, and pick up their first victory on its opponent’s turf.
“It was a positive weekend for us, it was good for us to see that we can come out and win in a close overtime win against Yale, and follow that up with a solid win against Lehigh” senior captain Abbi Horn said.

Field Hockey Sweeps Yale, Lehigh, Kickstarts Offense

The field hockey team swept a pair of games this weekend, defeating the Yale Bulldogs, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday before closing out the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 2-0, Sunday afternoon. Leading the way for the Red was sophomore attack Catie De Stio who scored two game-winning goals — including the overtime winner 3:23 into the extra frame — and added an assist. Senior co-captain Abbi Horn also scored a pair, while junior goalkeeper Melanie Jue surrendered just one tally over both games.
“It was a really positive weekend and satisfying for us,” Horn said. “We played our game and got two victories. To come out, play an Ivy game on Saturday, turn around, and grind out a victory against Lehigh on Sunday speaks highly of the team’s maturity this season.”

Martinez: A Rare Two-Time Captain

When the women’s field hockey team defeated Princeton last year for the first time since 1990, you wouldn’t have found its junior co-captain celebrating with the entire squad for long. Instead, Belen Martinez could be found shedding tears of joy while relaying the good news to her parents on the phone. For Martinez, the sport of field hockey is much more than a hobby, it is part of her identity.

Field Hockey Prepares for Title Run

In each of the past two seasons, Cornell has finished runner-up in the Ivy League standings. This year the field hockey team is looking to take that next step. So far, so good. The Red has gotten off to a 4-4 start, with a 2-0 record in the Ivy League. Though the team hasn’t won the Ivy title in 18 years, the opening victories are definitely a step in the right direction.
“We’ve really had a promising start in our Ivy League season, getting by Columbia in Connecticut and taking a win against Penn at home,” said assistant coach Ellen Davies.

Field Hockey Looking to Stay Perfect in Ivy

The field hockey team will step onto Marsha Dodson Field tomorrow to take on Ivy foe Yale and then return Sunday for a game against Lehigh. Coming off a tough loss against Fairfield, the Red is looking to redeem itself this weekend, especially against Yale.
“The competition in our conference is fierce, and really that means that anything can happen,” said head coach Donna Hornibrook. “Ivy competition is really tight, on any given day anything can happen. But our main intention is to go out there and win.”
The Red (4-4, 2-0 Ivy) currently holds a .500 record but is undefeated in Ivy play, having just netted a tough victory against Columbia last weekend.

Field Hockey Holds Off Columbia Comeback

The field hockey team split a pair of one-goal games this weekend, walking away with an Ivy victory. On Saturday, Cornell (4-4, 2-0 Ivy) squared off against the Columbia Lions (5-1, 0-1 Ivy) at Yale University’s Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn. After jumping out to a quick lead, the Red weathered a Lion comeback to snatch a 4-3 victory in an offense-oriented match.
A day later, the ladies rolled into Fairfield, Conn., to face off against the Fairfield University Stags (3-8).

Field Hockey Opens Ivy Road Schedule at Columbia

The field hockey team hopes to carry over the momentum it gained from last weekend’s two wins as it prepares for this weekend’s games. The Red will be on the road to face Columbia tomorrow and then travel across state lines to play Fairfield University in Connecticut on Sunday.
The matchup with Columbia (4-0, 1-0 Ivy) will present a tough challenge, as the Lions are off to a strong start this season. The last time the Red (3-3, 1-0) faced the Lions, Cornell won 2-1 in overtime.
The Lions are undefeated so far this year, however, and won their Ivy opener last weekend against Brown. Columbia comes prepared with a deep team — the squad’s goals this season have come from seven different players, with top scorer Caitlin Mullins scoring two of those goals.

Field Hockey Returns Home, Outscores Opponents 7-1

The field hockey team (3-3, 1-0 Ivy) christened the inaugural match of Marsha Dodson Field this weekend with style. On Saturday, the squad opened its Ivy play versus the Penn Quakers (1-6, 0-1 Ivy) with a 3-1 victory then followed the win with a 4-0 victory over Georgetown on Sunday.

Field Hockey Preps to Break in New Field Against Ivy Foe

The women’s field hockey team (1-3) will open Ivy play this weekend with two home matches. On Saturday at noon, the ladies will partake in pregame ceremonies as Cornell officially opens its newest sport facility, Marsha Dodson Field, before playing host to familiar foe Penn (1-5). Then on Sunday, the team will return to non-league play for a 1 p.m. match against Georgetown (0-6).
The squad is looking to bounce back from two close matches last weekend at Lock Haven and Bucknell. Both matches witnessed the Red suffer a 3-2 defeat, with the Lock Haven match requiring overtime. Indeed, one-goal losses have plagued the Red for the last couple of seasons — 13 of the team’s last 19 defeats have come in one-goal games, seven requiring overtime.
