Karen Chen ’25 to Receive Olympic Gold Two Years After Beijing Competition

Fifteen years since they last qualified, Cornell Figure Skating Club placed eighth at the 2023 National Intercollegiate Final.
Cornell’s figure skating team qualified to attend the National Intercollegiate Final competition, which is taking place next month. It has been 15 years since the team last qualified.
“That year at Cornell gave me so much perspective in my life, both academically and athletically,” Chen said. “I think I grew the most in that one year at Cornell. Just being in that unfamiliar situation helped me grow as a person, and therefore as an athlete and a skater.”
Seven Cornellians — including figure skater Karen Chen ’23 and five former members of the Women’s Hockey team — will compete or coach in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Karen Chen ’23 isn’t letting the pandemic slow her down. After placing 4th at the World Figure Skating Championships, she is training for a spot on the U.S. women’s Olympic team.

At the age of 19, Karen Chen ’23 has already won the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, competed at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics and published a book. Now, she’s joining Cornell’s Class of 2023.
