Due to hazing allegations, several University fraternities were suspended.
I of course have benefited from Greek life: I’ve made my best friends, I’ve met incredible people who I might never have met otherwise, I’ve expanded my professional network and I’ve had a lot of fun. I don’t have any regrets about my time with my fraternity, and I’m grateful for my experiences. But Greek life is a deeply flawed system founded on elitism and sexism, and still it often perpetuates prejudice.
More than a decade after being banned from campus over the death of George Desdunes ’13 during a Sigma Alpha Epsilon hazing activity, a campaign by the fraternity’s alumni has helped to return it to campus this spring.
The University revoked the recognition of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, a member of the MGLC, for at least two years as a result of incidents related to hazing.
If the fraternity fails to adhere to University rules during the probation period, “chapter recognition will be reconsidered,” Burke said.
According to the University’s statement, the interim suspension is “used when details of credible report compel the university to cease activities of the organization for the safety of the members, those joining, or guests.”
Cornell suspended the Pi Kappa Alpha on Friday, making the 100-year-old chapter the third fraternity suspended by the University in just over one month.
This suspension marks the second disciplinary action for a fraternity this year following the interim suspension of Sigma Phi Epsilon earlier this month.
