After an offseason battle against two upperclassmen, sophomore Dalton Banks came out on top as the team’s starting quarterback. In just six games, he has grown and matured immensely.
With its sights set on getting back into the “Cornell hockey mindset” for the regular season, the men easily downed two Canadian foes this weekend in a pair of exhibition games. The Red defeated UOIT on Friday, 3-1, and Brock on Saturday, 8-1.
“It hurts right now,” Archer said, “but tomorrow when the sun comes up it’ll be time to move on keep pressing this thing forward.”
After an exhilarating comeback left Cornell with a chance to make up another 21-point deficit, the Red fell just short — its second half charge was just “too little, too late,” as head coach David Archer ’05 put it.
Cornell’s defense prides itself on taking the ball away. On Saturday, it was successful at doing that, but the defensive’s risks also proved to backfire at times, giving up a handful of damaging big plays.
A loss to a bitter league rival would certainly have caused a distraction for most teams in preparing for the upcoming slew of games, but Cornell football refuses to be deterred.
“They allowed us to get the ball back at the end of the game. We knew if we got the ball back, we were going to go down and punch it in. Our guys made great plays and we were as happy as can be to finish out on top,” sophomore quarterback Dalton Banks said.
“Colgate’s obviously a very good football team, we need to give them everything that we have, but obviously Harvard is looming in the background of that,” senior captain and receiver Ben Rogers said. “Ivy League games carry a little bit more weight, obviously, but to be able to go into Colgate will be a really good test for us and hopefully prepare us well going into Harvard.”
Cornell opened the scoring early, as the Red dominated Yale on Homecoming 27-13 to secure its second win in as many games.
Yale leads the all-time head-to-head series 47 to 30, but the Red can inch one game closer if it follows these three keys to victory.
