Prof. Kathryn Boor ’80, food science, the current dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, will serve as the Graduate School dean and vice provost for graduate education, Provost Michael Kotlikoff announced on Monday afternoon.
As the economy descends into chaos, it’s time for Cornell to reconsider its grading policies. Namely, it’s time to reconsider the column of letters centered on every student transcript — each course’s median grades. Cornell publishes median grades on transcripts to protect against grade inflation and to represent each student’s performance in comparison to those of their peers. However, the University fails to acknowledge that, more often than not, these grades disadvantage students during graduate school admissions and job or internship searches. This semester, Cornell decided against compiling median grades.
The S.A. unanimously passed a resolution calling for Cornell’s graduate programs to temporarily waive GRE/GMAT requirements for the fall 2020 semester.
Just last week, I found myself going through an email that my mother sent me freshman year of all my old high school essays. As I flipped through the various attachments, cringing at my habitual use of bombastic language, I came across one titled “Babson.” I never wrote anything called “Babson,” I thought. The name didn’t ring a bell other than the college in Massachusetts, but I didn’t apply or even visit the school. I opened the document, and it had no date, name or title. I didn’t even have to finish reading the first line of broken English to recognize that it was written by my father.
