From a small pop-up in William Straight Hall to a student-led store that combines teaching with hands-on experience, The Sun explores the trajectory of Anabel’s Grocery on campus.
The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here — Trader Joe’s has officially opened in Ithaca! Both students and the Ithaca community alike have eagerly awaited this day. Located on 744 S Meadow Street, Trader Joe’s now occupies the corner store next to Old Navy. Students no longer have to trek to Syracuse to get their hands on the many decadent Trader Joe’s exclusives that we all know and love.
Walking into Trader Joe’s for the first time on Feb. 25 was like a breath of fresh air.
I didn’t want to come home. I enjoyed eating on campus, picking up apples at GreenStar and drinking cappuccinos from Gimme! Coffee. But even before I left Cornell to live at home with my parents, my family was discussing the plan for grocery shopping. My sister, who lives in New York City, insisted that I do the shopping instead of my parents, since their age puts them at a higher risk of complications from COVID-19.
Anabel’s Grocery — a student-run market founded to address food insecurity on Cornell’s campus — is set to reopen this fall after having spent the past semester trying to “reflect and reassess” the business’ operations.
If the line extending out the store Sunday is any indication of how Anabel’s will bring the community together, I think the wait for this store was well worth it.
What can we expect from GreenStar’s Collegetown location? “Delicious prepared foods to eat in or take away for any meal of the day, [including] sandwiches, salads, dips and more!” says Nathaniel Foster, GreenStar’s Collegetown store manager.
