The newly-elected Tompkins County sheriff said he was not happy that the deputy had called ICE on a Mexican man and said he drafted a new policy this week making it clear how and when county employees should interact with immigration authorities.

Somkiat Wandee, who a local immigrant rights coalition said was the head chef at Taste of Thai on the Ithaca Commons, has been released from custody on bond.

Man Arrested by ICE in Ithaca Must Remain in Marshals’ Custody, Judge Rules

A federal judge ordered that José Guzman-Lopez be remanded to a county Jail while the government prosecutes him for allegedly violating federal law by possessing a counterfeit green card.

The Mexican immigrant arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Ithaca last week has been charged for allegedly possessing a fraudulent document and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
