Disliking winter was a common sentiment, shared by my peers all around me. Seeing friends, going out, staying up late at the library — all were made dreadful in the now-freezing weather. Sometimes, it was easier to just stay home and avoid a winter that had caught me ill-equipped to face it.
So now, stepping back into in person classes, waddling through the white snow turned brown slush— I meet Ithaca Winter for the last time.
As thousands of Cornellians flocked back to Ithaca for the spring semester, the nor’easter that brought heavy snow across the East Coast this week hindered students’ travel plans — creating move-in hurdles beyond testing and quarantine as students drove through heavy snow to get to campus.
September: Cornell’s campus is warm and breezy with remnants of summer left over, and our local fauna scurry across the quads to pick up fallen crumbs of Zeus’ mac’n’cheese. The returning students can breathe in, and almost absorb, the giddiness around campus that radiates from our puppy-eyed freshmen. They’re still blazing with the recent-grad, on-to-the-next-stage-of-my-life buzz that comes from spending the first couple of weeks on a college campus. Class of 2023, it’s true, college is a blast. You’ve got some wonderful times ahead of you, but if you think Ithaca will always be this fairytale-esque, you’re shit out of luck.
