That’s why Cornell also has an obligation to take the larger circumstances behind a disruption into account, and to extend “tolerance,” too, to on-campus disruptions that are proportionate to the larger disruptive events in the world to which they respond. Content-neutral cannot mean content-free.

Following the suspension of international graduate student Momodou Taal, Cornell Graduate Students United rallied in front of Bailey and Day Hall asking administration to abide by a memorandum of agreement by bargaining the disciplinary action.
Any true union with teeth and a material commitment to justice would recognize this patterned behavior as systemic violence, and as union busting, as evidenced at Cornell’s peer institutions including Washington University in St. Louis, the University of California system and Duke University.
In theory, therefore, since Taal did not enter the alternate resolution, the complaint entered the “investigation” stage. This was six months ago, and Taal has received no updates.
With Taal’s permission we are writing to share our accounts, supported by written referrals and our contemporaneous notes, of what happened on the three occasions when Taal was the object of a disciplinary complaint.
