In the wake of Ithaca Police Department controversies and months of protests, Mayor Svante Myrick ’09 and town officials have released a set of proposals which would dramatically alter the structure of law enforcement in the city.
The mayor hopes that Cornellians’ return to campus in the fall will help revitalize the Ithaca economy.

Dear Mayor Myrick,
I hope your February break has been going well. It’s been a few weeks since I saw you driving through the Commons. I waved at you, but you pretended not to notice. I’m going to act like that never happened, because I have bigger issues that I want to address today. Since the last time we’ve met, I’ve been watching a lot of this Winter Olympics — dozens of sports that I never knew existed two weeks ago have now consumed my entire life.
Myrick said he turned down many tempting offers after Election Day — including a potential run for Congress — because he did not want to leave his post as mayor of Ithaca.
Svante Myrick ’09 was reelected to a second four-year term as mayor of the City of Ithaca Tuesday, beating write-in candidate Phoebe Brown by a margin of 1,779 votes to 228. Brown launched a write-in campaign against Myrick in October, even as she acknowledged the unlikeliness of winning. Currently a community outreach liaison for the Cayuga Medical Center’s Center for Healthy Living, Brown said she initiated the campaign to foster dialogue. In a social media post Wednesday night, Myrick expressed joy over his reelection. “With 89 percent of the vote I’ve been reelected Mayor of the City of Ithaca,” Myrick said. “Thank you for all of your support!”
Myrick was first elected City of Ithaca mayor in 2011, having served as an alderperson on the Common Council prior.
