Following a sudden resignation, congressional district redraw and a previous attempt to win the seat, Max Della Pia will have the chance to run for congress in N.Y.-23 with the Democratic Party’s support in a summer special election.
Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) declared victory in his reelection campaign for New York’s 23rd Congressional District at a small election night gathering in Corning around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. A delay in results caused by a high volume of mail-in ballots, however, means Reed and Democratic challenger Tracy Mitrano J.D. ’95 won’t know for several days the official and final results of their second head-to-head race.
Tracy Mitrano J.D. ’95 sat down with The Sun in the backyard of her Ithaca home in August. The gun-owning Democrat, labeled a “radical liberal” by her opponent, insisted her policies aren’t that radical and distinguished herself form the party’s more progressive leaders.
Some cities are notable for towering skyscrapers, others for offbeat museums or bucolic beauty. But to Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), who represents New York’s 23rd congressional district (including Cornell), Ithaca represents little more than a bastion of lefty extremism. And likewise, Tracy Mitrano, who lost to Reed in yesterday’s midterm election, is little more than an Ithaca outgrowth. In expressing this view, Reed does not pull punches. Look no further than his own campaign ads.
Over 60 supporters of Mitrano stood in a semi-circle as campaign workers, the mayor of Ithaca and Tracy Mitrano herself spoke Monday evening.
Most Cornellians graduate in four years. Tom Reed (R-NY), who represents New York’s 23rd district (including Ithaca), has been in office for twice that. But you wouldn’t know from the jeering Ithacans filling his town halls. Suffice it to say readers of The Cornell Daily Sun are far from Reed’s core constituency. And yet Cornell, as with Ithaca at large, is a blue speck amid a red sea.
