Going on throughout the month of March, Cornell Dairy is sponsoring a “golden cow” contest, in which five winners will receive a personal tour of Cornell Dairy, a lifetime membership to the Cornell Dairy co-op and 25 “dairy dollars” to spend at the Dairy Bar.
Katzenstein won the award for his work in “furthering the understanding of how history, culture and norms shape economies, as well as national and global security policy.”
Shakarean Hutchinson was awarded the Hurston/Wright Award for her short story titled “How to Kill Pigs.”
Genevieve Sullivan grad never thought that a case of food poisoning in would spark her interest in public health. During a study abroad program in Myanmar, the food science student thought she was “invincible” until she ate a dish that had unpasteurized milk in it, ironically prompting her to reflect on how lucky she was. “We’re so used to food safety, but in some developing nations they don’t necessarily have that — the expectation of safe food. This got me interested in public health,” Sullivan said. Last summer, Genevieve Sullivan, placed second in the Institute of Food Technologists’ undergraduate research competition, where she presented her paper ‘Physicochemical Factors Affect Bacterial Attachment on Food Packaging Surfaces: A Theoretical And Experimental Study.’ The IFT research competition not only judges students based on their research results, but also on their ability to communicate their research.
Judges for the Cornell Hospitality Business Plan Competition have declared the contest’s first-ever tie between two winning teams — Last Second Beach and Maidbot. The two teams will each receive $25,000 for their business plans and entrepreneurial ideas in travel and hotel operations, according to the University. Although the competition’s funding only provided a $25,000 prize for one team, Dean of the School of Hotel Administration, Prof. Michael Johnson, hotel administration, matched the prize for the other team, according to Maidbot founder Alex Levy ’18. “I was a little surprised it ended in a tie, as nothing like that had ever happened before,” Levy said. “I was very happy for [Last Second Beach founder Khalid Ladha grad] and his team, though and absolutely thrilled Dean Johnson matched the rest of the money.”
Last Second Beach — co-founded last year by Ladha and Zach Demuth grad — is a software platform that simplifies consumer navigation for travel purchases, according to Ladha.
