Cornell’s LGBTQ+ program house, the Loving House, arrived on campus this semester — but with an extra $5,000 for resources, literature, decorations, kitchen appliances and furniture, members of the Loving House and residence staff hope they can make it seem like more of a home.
The grand opening of the Loving House at Mews Hall was the culmination of decades of advocacy and hard work. This weekend, supporters celebrated with new residents, staff and administration to mark the beginning of Cornell’s newest program house.
Three alumni bonded by membership in the same fraternity decided they wanted to give back to the Cornell community in 2015. Nearly four years later, they successfully raised over $100,000 through alumni donations, creating Cornell’s first ever Latino-led and program house endowment for the Latino Living Center.
President Martha Pollack approved the creation of an LGBTQ program house on Monday, 25 years after then-Cornell president Frank H. T. Rhodes vetoed the Student Assembly’s resolution, which demanded the establishment of a Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Living-Learning Unit.
