Robert F. Smith ’85, the wealthiest black billionaire in the U.S., will be recognized with the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumni Award — the highest honor for alumni from the college.
Morehouse College announced on Friday that Cornell alumnus Robert F. Smith ’85 and his family completed their promise to the Morehouse College Class of 2019 with a $34 million donation to the new Morehouse College Student Success Program.
Cornell alumnus Robert F. Smith ’85 announced a plan to pay the student loan debt of nearly 400 Morehouse College graduates on Sunday, a gift estimated at $40 million.
Smith said he hopes his donation — which aims to bolster diversity by making a Cornell education more accessible — will uphold Ezra Cornell’s mission statement of founding “an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”
