Juniors Isabella Palde and Caroline Ramsey won Ivy League Player of the Week honors as Cornell swept weekend opponents to bring record to 6-3.
The Red had a successful road trip, beating Ivy League rival Dartmouth 3-1 and Lock Haven University 1-0.
After falling to 0-2, the Red will have a chance to notch a victory against an 0-3 Bucknell Bisons team that has scored a combined 9 points through three games.
Several golfers, led by senior Noah Schwartz, had career-best days en route to a fourth-out-of-twelve team finish.
Freshman Seychelle Balog and senior Maria Adiaconitei placed in their respective brackets as the team returned to competition.
The men’s team placed first overall in the team competition and the women’s team won the 6k competition.
Myers secured her second consecutive Singlehanded championship in Annapolis and Cornell placed third in the Cayuga Invite.
Following up on the consistent momentum that they have been building over the past couple of years, the men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their seasons today against Army by hosting a head-to-head race at the Ithaca Moakley Course. With strong performances in last year’s Ivy League Heps Championships and some successful individual NCAA qualifiers, the runners are aiming to recapture the Heps title in 2009.
Nevertheless, the Red will be without some of their top runners, including junior Adrien Dannemiller, who is taking a semester abroad in Switzerland, and senior Peter Loy who is out of commission with a knee injury. However, the runners are optimistic about their 2009 campaign regardless of the obstacles that they will be facing.
The fall tennis season begins today, with the Red taking on a mixed field of Ivy foes and local contenders. The men will play host to the Cornell Fall Invitational at Reis Tennis Center today through Sunday.
The men’s team is returning to the court after a breakout season with now second-year head coach David Geatz, who led the Red to a second place finish in the Ivy League. The team dropped only two matches last year against the Ancient Eight, both of which went down 4-3. The Red graduated five seniors, and has brought on five freshmen to fill the empty spots. This season may be harder for the Red, after losing a few players who, according to junior Jeremy Feldman, were the “heart and soul of the team.”
M. Basketball Names Tri-Captains
Three seniors will step up to share the captain title for the men’s basketball team in 2009-10, head coach Steve Donahue announced on Tuesday: center Jeff Foote and forwards Alex Tyler and Jon Jacques, who serves on the Sun’s editorial writing board. Foote and Tyler are two of the five returning starters from last year, and Jacques has been a vocal leader on the team and played in 13 games last season.
Foote is the reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year after posting 7.2 rebounds per game and 2.1 blocks per game, both Ivy League-leading figures. He also bulked up in offseason while playing in the Howard Pulley Summer Pro League in St. Paul, Minn. — up to 265 from 245.
