Although the Red lost to Army, Nicholas scored on a pick-six in a bittersweet last game of a four-year varsity career.
Sprint football edged a 6-0 victory over Chestnut Hill University amid heavy rain and fast wind for their second consecutive win of the season.
After three straight losses to start the season, Cornell Sprint Football was determined to leave week four with a win. Despite a rocky start to the game, the team was able to rally to a 30-27 win, the team’s first victory since September 14, 2019.
Under the lights at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia, the Cornell Sprint Football team suffered their third loss of the season. Still winless, the team has been outscored 143-15 across all their contests and are looking for something to change soon.
The Red found their first bright spot at the end of the third quarter when junior quarterback Xavier Martinez hit Evan Nicholas on a slant pass. Nicholas torched the Cougar defense up the middle, making a house call on a 71-yard touchdown.
After a year-long hiatus from competition, Cornell Sprint Football traveled down to northern Pennsylvania to face the Mansfield Mounties for their season opener of the 2021 season. Looking to improve from their 2019 record of 1-5, the Red had high hopes to start their season off on a better note against the Mounties.
“We consider everybody part of the family — as soon as you sign up, you’re part of the family,” head coach Bob Gneo said.
“We’ve grown a lot as a program and I’m super excited to build on that and make a run this year.”
“We were incredibly focused on winning this game — to have a chance against Army. We had to beat Post, and we did exactly that.”
Cornell put up a stunning 23-point fourth quarter on the way to downing the Spartans 30-15.
