Memorial Service Planned for Lanzing ’09

The University has scheduled a support meeting for Cornell student Matthew Lanzing ’09 who died in Ithaca on Jan. 12. Lanzing was a film major from Bradenton, Fla. He was 22 years old, according to his Facebook profile.
Lanzing’s friend, Scott Weiss ’09, remembered him as an outspoken, politically-active member of the Cornell community, and was a member of Cornell’s International Socialist Organization and student anti-war groups.
Weiss, who lived with Lanzing for the past several years, said that he decided to come to Cornell, in part, because he had met people like Lanzing when he was a pre-frosh.

C.U. Remembers Evan D. Wade ’08

The University community gave a final goodbye to Evan Dowland Wade ’08 yesterday at a memorial service in the Anabel Taylor Hall Chapel. Wade, a mechanical and aerospace engineering major who died in a car crash Oct. 24, was lauded for his faith, humility and talent.
After a brief opening prayer by Reverend Kenneth I. Clarke, director of Cornell United Religious Work, mourners were welcomed by Dr. Susan H. Murphy ’73, vice president of Student and Academic Services. Murphy remarked on a recent reading of Wade’s archived admissions application, saying that the personal beliefs he expressed in his admissions essay were manifested in his everyday life.

"Light to India": In Memoriam of a Hero

The British Columbian newspaper The Province recently published an article on
Lillian Doerksen, a Canadian missionary to India who passed away on October 9.

It’s a fascinating piece. Doerksen spent over half her life raising orphaned girls and opening schools in Maharashtra for the deaf. She is described as Prakash Moushi (“Auntie of Light”) and the “Protestant Mother Teresa” (although I have found that title ascribed to a few other figures). She met important figures such as Billy Graham, and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and even had a three-minute private audience with the Dalai Lama.

Wade was a senior in the College of Engineering and a member of the Naval ROTC. Originally from Williamsburg, Va., he is survived by his parents and two brothers, according to the University.
