With the spread of the novel coronavirus, the University takes stringent measures to mitigate the effects.
Every year, Cornellians travel around the country and world to get away from the cold of Ithaca for a couple days during February break. Unfortunately, by emitting greenhouse gases, traveling by car, plane or bus can contribute to climate change — with America’s transportation alone responsible for almost 30 percent of all global warming emissions in the US.
As students flock back to campus from various destinations, Prof. Danielle Eiseman, communication, weighed in on the most sustainable methods for traveling.
The University cancelled classes and closed the campus on Monday due to the latest seasonal storm, and although past shutdowns have been rare, snow storms have affected campus in various ways over the decades.
Zhang was one of many students who took to social media to recount their troubles with traveling back to Ithaca on Sunday. The snowstorm, which started Sunday and continued into Monday, dropped nearly a foot of snow in Ithaca.
For many international students, their trips to Cornell routinely take up to dozens of hours and are often accompanied by sleep deprivation, difficult accommodations and surprising episodes.
Students who travel with OurBus in and out of Ithaca might no longer be able to do so after May 15, when OurBus’s permit to use the Green Street bus terminal will expire.
In hopes of eradicating the stereotypes against their home country, two Cornell alumni from Pakistan started organizing trips to bring students to their home country starting last year. This past spring break, 24 Cornell students travelled to Pakistan, where they got to learn about the culture and meet notable figures such as the President and the Chief of the Military.
OurBus, a transportation service that operates in the area, recently added a year-round route between Ithaca and Long Island, with stops along the North Shore of Long Island.
While some students traversed campus in snow boots, sleds and skis, other Cornellians scrambled to secure last-minute lodging or alternative travel arrangements.
The Sun has aggregated all the information about the upcoming storm that you may need to get to campus, one way or another.
