Letter to the Editor: Why STEM graduate students support CGSU

A union does not limit STEM stipends, but protects them. A union will not negatively impact students who receive the best stipends. Instead, it protects and guarantees increases to the highest stipends, and also increases the minimum. Currently graduate students have no say in minimum stipends and no guarantee that individual stipends will increase from year to year. Summer appointment letters decreased by up to $780 in engineering departments in 2016 compared with 2015. It is unclear how widespread this cut was within the school of engineering since the administration does not inform us of pay cuts, who they affect, or why they occurred.

WEISSMANN | The Rise of the Sticker Selfie

Last Tuesday, along with just over half the country, I voted. (Only 55 percent of voting age Americans cast ballots. Come on, people.) I drove the 48 miles to my hometown, a region projected to be a deep shade of red. It was nearly an hour into enemy territory, all to participate in person and fulfill my civic duty. My family piled into the car and drove to a church a few blocks over; we even took my youngest brother along, despite his not being able to vote until 2020.

TRUSTEE VIEWPOINT | Vote!

This is a big day for voting at Cornell. First, every Cornell student has the chance to vote for the next Graduate/Professional Student Trustee today here. Polls are open until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20. There are four excellent candidates for the position. I am confident that whoever wins will be a thoughtful trustee who brings an important student viewpoint to Cornell’s Board.
