I have friends in their 70s who hold high belts in Tae Kwan Do. They have had hip-replacement surgery because of their Tae Kwan Do activities. I had a friend, now deceased, who had hip-replacement surgery after many decades of Karate. All of these people have/had serious problems with arthritis. If the students on the Tae Kwan Do team want to pursue martial arts as part of their lives, they would be wise to pursue less damaging arts. Aikido and Judo practiced together provide a good self-defense capability without the injuries that come with the long practice of Tae Kwan Do and Karate. Practicing these arts is also a good way to exercise regularly.
