BREAKING: CIS Dean Kavita Bala Will Be Cornell’s 17th Provost

Kavita Bala will take the helm as Cornell’s 17th provost, with a five-year appointment starting Jan. 1, 2025. Bala currently serves as the dean of the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. Interim President Michael Kotlikoff announced the appointment in a Wednesday morning email, thanking John Siliciano ’75 for his leadership as interim provost. Bala’s career at Cornell began in 1999 as a postdoctoral researcher.

Protesters from The Coalition for Mutual Liberation marched from Ho Plaza into Klarman Hall on Monday afternoon, chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and “From the sea to the river, Palestine will live forever.”

While Monday’s protest was centered around Palestine, it also touched on the ongoing labor dispute between United Auto Workers Local 2300 — the union representing University food service, custodial, maintenance and other workers — and the University.
