In his most recent email, Rawlings reaffirmed that once admitted, these students will be eligible for need-based financial aid for the duration of their time at Cornell.
“We write about xenophobia and bigotry, but will not pretend they only exist elsewhere,” the department wrote. “We research racism, homophobia and misogyny, but will not permit them to pass unchallenged.”
Prof. Aziz Rana, law — who heads the coalition’s Legal and Policy Working Group — explained that the coalition, primarily composed of Cornell faculty, was the result of a widespread desire to make the sanctuary petition more “cross campus.”
In a statement released Tuesday — after the sanctuary petition garnered over 2,000 signatures from students, faculty and alumni — Rawlings addressed concerns about the future of undocumented students at Cornell during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Cornell currently spends about $235 million annually on undergraduate financial aid, of which $11.53 million is budgeted towards grant aid for international and undocumented students, according to provost Michael Kotlikoff.
