Coming off a game in which Cornell field hockey head coach Andrew Smith said his team “got it horribly wrong,” the Red needed a good bounceback. Cornell got it with a road win at Colgate on Tuesday.
“We are on a different trajectory now,” new head coach Andrew Smith said. “For us, each game is just a game and we just have to focus on the task at hand.”
The Red, touting an untarnished 2-0 record in their early season, was not prepared for the offensive intensity that No. 14 St. Joseph’s brought to Dodson Field. Just seven minutes into play, the Hawks eclipsed a goal to send the Red to an early deficit.
The Red turned the tables on history, breaking a 12-year losing streak to the No. 18 seeded Orange with a final 2-1 tally.
New head coach Andy Smith made his debut as head coach at the University of the Pacific, where, in his six-year tenure, he donned a 61-57 career record and coached the team to four conference championship wins.
Cornell struggled to convert shots into goals in an 0-2 loss that relegated the team to the bottom of Ivy League rankings.
Cornell field hockey came up short against conference rival Harvard in what ultimately became an 8-0 landslide victory for the Crimson in which the Red could never get its offense going.
In what was a veritable battle of defenses, Yale needed only a single last minute goal to extend Cornell’s conference losing streak to three.
“The thing that’s really important is that we keep and optimistic view of what can happen in every game and that we work together and play together,” head coach Stephen Simpson said. “That’s what we have to do and if we do those things, we give ourselves a chance in every game we play.”
“Going forward, ultimately, we just need to convert on our opportunities. Everything is really there for us to be successful, but at the end of the day, we can’t get the outcomes we want unless we score goals.”
