Tough Season Continues for Men’s Soccer in Loss to Yale

The season-long struggle continued for the Cornell men’s soccer team this past Saturday. After the team’s first win of the season at Colgate, the Red hoped to build on the momentum when it faced Yale at home. After an evenly-matched first half, Yale went on to score 3 unanswered goals in the second half, and the Red came out with a disheartening 3-0 loss. Despite a strong comeback victory for the Red at Colgate, the team came into this weekend’s game with a very uninspired showing. “You know, I don’t mind not winning when everybody’s giving 100 percent effort, I’ll take those losses on the chin,” said Head Coach John Smith in an interview with Cornell Athletics.

Men’s Soccer Earns First Win of Season After Devastating Loss to Harvard

At the kickoff of the second half of its Tuesday night game, the Cornell men’s soccer team (1-9-2) (0-0-2 Ivy) was down 1-0 to the Colgate Raiders (8-4-0) and had not even taken a single shot. The outlook seemed grim. Before Tuesday night, the Raiders had failed to lose a match when they scored first this season. The Red was coming off two consecutive Ivy League losses and seemed to be losing momentum. But during the second half, something suddenly clicked.

Cornell Men’s Soccer to Open Ivy League Play Against Penn

After a brutal non-conference schedule for the Cornell men’s soccer team (0-7-2), the Red will look to start strong in Ivy League play as they open up against Penn (2-1-4) on Sunday at home. Up to now, the Red have been outshot (130-71), outscored (22-7), given up more corner kicks (60-29) and have more penalties (11-9) than their opponents. Despite a frustrating start to the season for the Red, the team will look to take lessons from their non-conference play. “We played some very good teams in a very short amount of time so these guys were put to the test mentally and physically,” said Assistant Coach Drew Hutchins. “While that sort of concentrated schedule is something we’ll do our best to avoid in the future, there’s no doubt that this group is stronger because of it.”

Hutchins believes that having a more spread out schedule, after a concentrated non-conference lineup, will benefit the team.

Men’s Soccer Winless in First Two Games

The Cornell Men’s Soccer team (0-1-1) began its highly anticipated season with a loss to Central Connecticut State University (0-1-1). With home-field advantage and a two goal lead heading into the final 30 minutes, the Red gave up two goals to the Blue Devils and ended with a 2-2 tie. “We lost a little bit of focus,” junior forward Jonathan Cullom said. “We started off strong with two good goals. Both of their goals were set pieces off long throws, which we definitely could have tightened up on.”

Still, given the unique position the team is in —touting a new coach after a tenuous season last year — there are definite silver linings to take away from this performance.
