This weekend, the Cornell women’s swim team finished its league competition, which culminated in the Ivy Championship meet. The meet lasted three days and while the Red finished in seventh, the team left with five new school records and countless highlights from the weekend.
Both men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams faced off against Brown on Saturday in a hotly contested dual meet in Teagle Hall. The meet was the last regular season competition for the program before Ivy League Championships later this month. The atmosphere in Teagle was packed with energy from a home crowd supporting the Red’s men and women, but unfortunately only the men’s team was able to prevail over the Bears. The women’s team fought hard in the meet and only narrowly lost to the visitors, 156-143. The relays in particular were intense competition between two skilled relay teams from the Ivy League rivals.
Cornell men’s swimming team had a very eventful winter break; the team traveled to Puerto Rico for an annual training trip and competed in three meets. The men’s and women’s teams both traveled to the tropics for a trip that has become part of the program’s yearly traditions, allowing the teams to enjoy break in a tropical paradise while getting in valuable hours of swimming during extended practices and an Ivy League matchup meet, this year against Yale. “The highlight of winter break was our training trip to Puerto Rico,” said men’s team head coach Wes Newman ’09. “We swim four hours a day and get a lot of hard work in there. The team always comes back in their best shape ready to finish out the season strong.”
Puerto Rico was also host to the Red’s season matchup with Yale, a team that has been strong in recent years.
Cornell men’s swimming and diving is on a roll. The Red opened its season at home this past weekend against Binghamton, and the men posted several blazing fast times in the pool to beat Binghamton en route to a 165.5-117.5 victory. In the two men’s diving events, the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, the Red was represented by sophomore Noah Sterling and junior Deyon Godbay, and the two divers performed well, with Godbay earning first place in the 1-meter and Sterling doing the same in the 3-meter dive. “Our men dove solidly in this meet, their scores have risen since the Buffalo scrimmage,” said diving head coach Veronica Ribot-Canales. The only previous competition the Red have had this season was an unscored scrimmage against Buffalo.

This season, Cornell men’s swimming and diving has a concrete goal: to improve upon its last season and show the Ivy League what Cornell is made of. With previous assistant coach Wes Newman ’09 named as the new head coach of the swimming team, Cornell swimming is looking to make an impact in its conference this year. The Red will be starting its season this Saturday with a meet at the University of Buffalo. This meet is the opener for the swim and dive squad, but it will be closer to a scrimmage — events will not be individually scored and many swimmers will be swimming events that are not their specialty. When asked about team goals for this meet, Newman said the team is just looking to gage where they are coming into the season.
