Women’s Soccer Prepares to Open Ivy Schedule Against Columbia

Cornell women’s soccer ended a four-game losing streak Sunday with a 1-0 win over upstate rival Binghamton. The Red aims to carry the momentum from its victory into the team’s first Ivy League match-up on Friday against Columbia. The game will be hosted by the Lions at Fairleigh Dickinson’s campus in Teaneck, N.J.

Rutgers, SDSU Overpower Cornell Women’s Soccer

The Cornell women’s soccer team (2-3) dropped two games this weekend, failing to stop the potent offenses of No. 23 Rutgers on Friday and San Diego State on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights’ offensive attack overpowered the Red throughout the game, firing 18 shots compared to the Red’s four. Rutgers went on to win, 2-0. Similarly, in the game against SDSU, the Aztecs out-shot the Red, 19-10, and issued Cornell its third loss of the season.

First Loss Halts Women’s Soccer’s Unbeaten Streak Out of League at 13

The Red (2-1-0) lost its first game of the season this past Sunday, falling to Syracuse (4-1-1), 2-1, in overtime. It was the team’s first home game of the season. Stephanie Skilton of the Orange scored first in the game, sending a high shot from the edge of the box over senior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney’s head with 3:49 remaining in the first half. The Orange out-shot the Red 5-2 in the first, but the Red improved play in the second. “We just asked them to play a little more direct … and encourage the forwards to go run at people,” head coach Patrick Farmer said to Cornell Athletics after the game, when asked about what he told his players to change in the second half.

Cornell Women’s Soccer Notches First Win Over Siena College 1-0

For the second year in a row, the women’s soccer team kicked their season off against in-state opponent Siena College. While last year’s opener ended in a draw, this year’s saw Cornell get the better of the Saint Bernards in a 1-0 win. Junior forward Paige DeLoach had the team’s lone goal in the fifth minute which was all that was necessary to secure the win. The Red’s defense, and especially senior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney, was able to hold off the Saints for the game’s last 85 minutes. “Overall, I think the team played very well through the heat and tough conditions,” DeLoach said.

WOMEN’S SOCCER | Red Falls in its Last Game of the Season but Still Claims Best Finish Since 1996

As another soccer season ended this past weekend, the Cornell women’s squad finished in fifth place in the Ivy League, the best finish it has seen in 20 years. Saturday’s match against Dartmouth (8-4-4, 1-3-3 Ivy), the last of the season, was a close game between two competitive teams. While the Red (9-4-4, 2-4-1 Ivy) ultimately fell to the Green, 0-1, the team has seen a successful season overall and has a lot to look forward to next season. “For Saturday’s match at Dartmouth, I was disappointed in the result, and in our attacking performance for part of the time,” said head coach Patrick Farmer. “I didn’t think we played with the speed or aggression we had shown in training earlier in the week or that we expected for this match. We did better in the second half and maybe did enough to warrant a draw, but not enough to earn the win.”

Despite the disappointment in Saturday’s results, Farmer said he thinks the team had strong season, with many players of different ages contributing on the field.

WOMEN’S SOCCER | Women Look for Best Finish in 20 Years

Despite the unseasonal warmth this week, winter is still on the horizon and fall sports are wrapping up for the year. Cornell women’s soccer will play its last game of 2015 this Saturday against Dartmouth (7-4-4, 0-3-3 Ivy) after a disappointing loss to first place Princeton (13-3, 6-0). While the Red had the chance to upset the Tigers and threaten their first place standing, Princeton was able to clinch its No. 1 spot and the Ivy NCAA tournament bid with a 2-0 win over Cornell (9-3-4, 2-3-1). However, rather than dwelling on the loss to Princeton, the women have shifted focus to this weekend’s game against the Green.

WOMEN’S SOCCER | Red Loses to No. 1 NCAA-Bound Princeton

In what has been one of the best seasons for the Cornell women’s soccer team in 20 years, the Red had a chance to upset the No. 1 team in the Ivy League on Saturday. However, Princeton (13-3-0, 6-0 Ivy), coming off of a nine-game winning streak, was able to clinch the Ivy League bid to the NCAA tournament and find its 10th win in a row against the Red (9-3-4, 2-3-1 Ivy). A characteristically strong Cornell defense did its best to hold off the Tigers, who boast two particularly strong players on the attack. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney earned herself seven saves, a season high for 2015.

The pressure is on for Princeton. With a win this Saturday, Cornell women’s soccer can spoil Princeton’s chance to clinch the Ivy league title while tacking on another win to the already successful season for the Red. However, the Princeton Tigers (12-3, 5-0 Ivy) have not lost since Sept. 13 of this season and are on an absolute tear. The Tigers have won 10 straight matches, two of which were decided in overtime.
