Cornell’s gymnastics team placed second at the 2012 Big Red Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Gymnasium. The Red ended the day with a team score of 189.525, falling just below Southern Connecticut (190.050). Ithaca College (187.250) and West Chester (185.150) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Cornell claimed first place in two of the day’s four events, with sophomore Lexi Schupp earning 9.700 on bars and senior Melanie Standridge recording a 9.825 on beam. The Red also had sophomore Sarah Wetter finish fifth (9.500) and sophomores Melanie Jorgensen and Nicolette Shofner tie for sixth (9.450). Standridge’s 9.825 on beam was a tremendous boost for the Red, as the senior has struggled with falls in the previous weeks.  Junior McKenna Archer (9.775) and Schupp (9.650) rounded out the Top-3 for beam, giving the Red a 1-2-3 sweep.

Archer placed second on vault, recording a 9.750, while senior Tiffany Chen finished first on floor for the Red with a 9.625, earning her a sixth-place tie for the event. Cornell had the highest team score on both vault (47.475) and beam (48.050).
