“[These games] are huge,” head coach Mike Schafer ’86 said. “If you have aspirations to be in the NCAA tournament, every game is crucial.”
From a strategically-positioned student section, designed to get inside the heads of opposing goalies, to a sleek NHL-esque layout, the new arena provides Colgate with the opportunity to get the most of home-ice advantage. But Cornell did not care about that.
Just three days after an emotional win over New Hampshire at Madison Square Garden, Cornell men’s hockey will be tested yet again, this time against Colgate on the road.
Saturday’s game against New Hampshire was not the first time junior forward Alex Rauter got to live out his childhood edream, but this night against UNH was certainly was his most memorable.
“I guess it hasn’t really hit me yet,” freshman forward Noah Bauld said of his first career goal, “but it’s an amazing feeling for sure.”
It is the eighth time Cornell men’s hockey is playing at Madison Square Garden since 2007, going 2-3-2 in the seven games prior.
“When we pull into that rink and the city, we encourage our players to soak it all in and absorb it because for them they only get a chance to do it once a year,” said head coach Mike Schafer ’86.
