The shootout win delivers Cornell an important extra point for the ECAC standings and wraps up a weekend in which the Red secured 5/6 points.
“We have been really talking a lot about just being consistent in our play and consistent in our habits,” Derraugh said. “It’s never perfect, but I thought we were pretty good today in that regard.”
Cornell capitalized on its chances and scored a season-high six goals — including one on the power play — for its first regulation road win of the season.
“I thought last night we probably deserved a better fate. Didn’t get it,” Jones said. “So we should have responded today and came out with the effort and attitude to get it done here tonight. But we wanted some shortcuts.”
The Red fired 41 shots on goal, but only one found the back of the net in its 1-1 tie with Sacred Heart
The regulation loss was Cornell’s first against an out-of-conference opponent in the regular season since Jan. 14, 2023.
Cornell fired 35 shots on net in the win. Junior forward Dalton Bancroft led the way for the Red, scoring the game-winning third goal and firing seven shots on goal.
Men’s hockey was ranked 16th in the most recent USCHO.com poll on Dec. 30, falling 10 spots from its highest ranking — No. 6 in the Nov. 11 iteration of the poll. The Red has seen its ups and downs through the first half of its season.
Many college hockey fans laughed at the single voter that continued to award Cornell its first-place vote in the early in the season, even before the Red had taken the ice.
“We didn’t play the way we need to play as a hockey team. The wheels fell off tonight.”
“We didn’t get discouraged on the bench. I never felt like guys were down on the bench tonight or questioned whether they would keep coming,” said head coach Mike Schafer ’86. “They did the job.”
