Young Punter Shines

To the untrained eye of the average fan, a punter’s accomplishments often go unnoticed. More likely than not, a punter’s presence on the field draw boos and heckles from supporters who believe that coaches should always have a go at fourth downs.

But last Saturday, no one could claim to be unsatisfied or indifferent when freshman Mike Baumgartel unleashed a wicked 81-yard punt in the first quarter during Cornell’s 26-6 loss against Harvard. Breaking the previous Ivy League record of 79 yards, Baumgartel’s effort was one of the few silver linings in a game that crushed the spirits of even the most ardent Cornell football fans.

Thanks to a favorable tailwind and a healthy roll, Baumgartel’s boot —
