What’s in a name after all? It’s just something we use to refer to other things right? Obviously I’m oversimplifying things, almost pointlessly. Names will and have always been important signifiers that remain open to interpretation and possess overdetermined meanings. In the case of musical genre, this conflict becomes even more problematic, especially in the post-punk/rock/minimalism/hardcore/grunge, lest we forget po-mo, world we live in today. Endless webs of semantic issues arise as new styles and sounds extend beyond any categorical, single genre.
