Polo Matches Canceled

After a disappointing loss last weekend to Buffalo, the men’s polo team was scheduled to saddle up against the University of Virginia tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center. The women’s team was slated to host Virginia tonight at 7:30 p.m. However both matches will be played at a later date.

The Red found out about the canceled games at the end of practice last night. The players had been looking forward to the match for some time.

“They were really psyched” head coach David Eldredge ’81 said.

Of the news, Eldredge stated that, “this really has been a disastrous month for UVA.”

According to Eldredge, of UVA’s men’s team, “one of the players has pneumonia, one has bronchitis, and another’s family home just burnt down this past week.”

“It was a deflation of all the practice we’ve had,” said Eldredge. “But, we’re very glad we are not in UVA’s shoes right now.”

This weekend’s match would have undoubtedly been an intense and exciting match. Currently, the Cavs rank No.1 in the country with the Red trailing closely behind in the No. 2 spot.

Eldredge is attempting to set up a match against Valley Forge Military Academy in place of the regularly scheduled game, but “we haven’t gotten confirmation yet.”

“They had an open spot, so we’re trying to set that up,” Eldredge said.

UVA’s women’s team has also seen its share of tragic events lately. The captain of the team underwent emergency heart surgery this week.

The Red has tied Virginia once this season, and won 19-9 during the second meeting between the two clubs.

These recent events will give the Red a nice break for the weekend, but fans can be guaranteed that the high ranking men’s and women’s teams will play a critical match against UVA before the National Championships later in the season.
