On Thanksgiving Day 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt once mused: “Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.” During Thanksgiving break 2002, at a seedy comic club somewhere along the Sunset Strip, some nameless hack comic proudly proclaimed: “Thanksgiving. Bad time to start a diet.” Thanksgiving is one of those great holidays because it operates under its own unique set of rules.
