Junior tailback Luke Siwula was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team yesterday. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be either a varsity starter or reserve, performing in the classroom and on the gridiron. All honorees have posted a grade point average of over 3.20 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached at least a sophomore academic standing. Siwula was rewarded for his hard work outside the lines of Schoellkopf Field, where the Industrial and Labor Relations major has posted a 3.60 GPA.
Siwula, a Cortland, N.Y., native, was named to the All-Ivy second team this season for after a campaign that saw him rack up 885 yards rushing and score six touchdowns, two of them through the air. After the 2006 season, Siwula moved into sixth place on the all-time Cornell career rushing list with 1,978 yards.
