Don’t let the name fool you — though these Pornographers are here to entertain, they typically require more money to put on their show than your average pornographers. No, we are not talking sleazy strippers and porn stars; we are talking feel-good, indie rock musicians.
The New Pornographers are much more than musical entertainers — through a combination of soothing harmonic riffs and sharp lyrics, they have proven they can deliver with a splash of hot sauce. The band seamlessly combines their uplifting sounds and comforting vibes with the help of celebrity mainstays — namely singer-songwriters A.C. Newman and Neko Case. This power pop duo brings their tried-and-true skills to the band, writing and composing many of the tracks and contributing lead vocals and instrumentals. Each of the band’s eight members brings a distinct individual personality to the show, further enhanced by the multitude of different instruments on stage. Yet, the overall aura they create still emphasizes the cohesive family-band style that unifies their inimitable sound.
Opening for the New Pornographers are Okkervil River, a lesser-known band that brings instrumental riffs and vocal power to rival the Pornographers. They have a unique sound which, amplified by their energetic presence, will assuredly make for a bedazzling spectacle of an evening. Though they may not be as carefree as their counterparts, as the subject matter they deal with tends more toward the side of aggressive, belligerent tragedies, their brainy and possibly overly dramatic lyrics will undoubtedly transport you into new emotional dimensions.
With bands like these, the popular Cornell music scene starts to look toward the greater virtues of music — bands with smart and chic lyrics who can do more than just repeatedly play a few chords. We can only cross our fingers and hope the trend will continue in this direction.
For now, take advantage of this fortunate turn of events and head down to the State Theatre this Sunday at 8 p.m. to hear some sweetly rousing music. And remember, while the New Pornographers will assuredly lighten your mood and put a smile on your face, the only sort of arousal you will most likely experience at this show will be the musically enlightening sort.
