As graduate students prepare to head to the polls, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) sent a statement to Cornell graduate workers pronouncing his support for unionization.
At an information session CGSU hosted for graduate students, Michael Durney, grad, questioned the portrayal of the administration as a “rich, uncaring” group.
“I am not confident in [CGSU’s] ability to perform the duty that they’re saying that they’re going to do,” Bollu said.
“Although we must be circumspect in communications with students, I can be brutally blunt with you: I believe it will be a disaster in the long run if unionization occurs — an existential risk to Cornell’s graduate program,” the email read.
“I respect the right of our employees to join together and represent their common interests, and I expect the same from Cornell, our biggest employer,” his statement read.
In what some students were calling a Pi Day miracle, for the first time in 24 years, the campus shut down for more than a full day, canceling classes from noon on Tuesday until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Classes and exams have been canceled while the University is closed. However, evening classes are set to remain in session, according to the announcement.
“Everyone struggles with stress, but they should not struggle on their own — they should know that someone is there to support them and listen to them if they need someone to talk to,” said a current EARS counselor.
Cornell Graduate Students United announced on Sunday that the graduate student union recognition election will take place later in March.
The Curriculum Committee presented its first draft proposal — a culmination of 15 months of effort — to Arts and Sciences faculty in a town hall on Thursday.
