Following the resignation of Steve Smith (D-4th Ward) in August, two Cornellians are running to fill in for the 4th Ward, citing hopes to increase communication between the city and students, create more affordable housing options and more.
The City of Ithaca and Tompkins County have approved funding for the Community Justice Center, a new establishment intended to implement the 19 recommendations from the historic Ithaca Police Department overhaul proposal.
“Undoubtedly the new buildings will contribute to the light pollution,” said Prof. Phil Nicholson, astronomy, who advises the Cornell Astronomical Society.
S.A. put the final stamp on ending its financial support of Cornell Cinema in a poorly-attended special meeting that almost failed to achieve a quorum.
S.A. will decide how much to allocate to Cornell Cinema after the Provost said C.U. would provide $36,000 to $40,000 to the Cinema in the next byline cycle.
The collaboration, which would take place after the S.A. tables the vote scheduled for Thursday, would result in a long-term funding model for the Cinema.
The Provost has indicated it’s unlikely that Cornell can cover the deficit the Cinema would incur if S.A. votes to divest from the Cinema in 2018.
Cornell is offering a free semester to 58 students at Universidad de Puerto Rico impacted by recent storms in spring 2018 as their home institution continues to operate at limited capacity.
The Student Assembly Appropriations Committee voted on Monday to allocate $0 to Cornell Cinema in 2018-20 in advance of the S.A. meeting on Thursday, when members of the Assembly will debate whether or not to approve the Committee’s recommendations.
Canceling debts “may be well intentioned,” Klarman wrote in his letter, but would be “impractical” as it would undermine the obligation of bond issuers to repay their obligations that support Puerto Rico’s credit markets.
