Prof. Emeritus Stephen Poleskie, an international artist and writer, died on Dec. 21, 2019. He was 81.
“What’s especially interesting about the Cornell project is that it’s the study of an institution,” said Prof. Jeremy Braddock, English. “That includes student life, the relationship of the university to the community and the unique research collections that exist at Cornell.”
Founded initially as two independent ideas by Katie Go ’22 and Javier Correa ’20 — both of whom had been unaware that the other had already been looking to solve the same problem — Cornell Creatives now encompasses over 100 members and close to 700 Instagram followers, a feat that took the young upstart only two weeks since its launch to achieve.
While Prof. Judith Peraino, music, was combing through the archives at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh for her upcoming book, she found something of a golden treasure: a cassette tape with a dozen unreleased songs from rock legend Lou Reed.
“Flowers and butterfly mask the genocide on the Karen People. A girl hiding in the Burmese forest from the brutal military junta. Many Karen crossed the Sarawren to peace and security in Thailand,” reads the text placed at the bottom of the three panels.
In early April, the Cornell fine art department’s Tjaden Hall will welcome the community to its galleries for an exhibition led entirely by undergraduate art students. This is the first year the show will be held.
The symposium, titled ‘“Feminist Directions: Performance, Power, and Leadership” was organized by graduate students Jayme Kilburn and Kelly Richmond, both in the performing and media arts department.
This “Edit-a-Thon” was part of an international campaign to improve coverage of female artists, writers and performers. Cornell participated in the movement by hosting the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon in Olin Library on International Women’s Day.
